Root Canals don't cause pain....they relieve it.
Root Canals have an unfair reputation. Contrary to all the jokes about them, at Gledhill Dental not only can you expect to have your pain relieved, but be comfortable in the process.
The dread of dental patients everywhere, a root canal becomes necessary when a tooth is severely infected, or decayed beyond restoration. According to the American Dental Association, a root canal is necessary when the pulp, the soft tissue inside the root canal, becomes inflamed or infected. The inflammation or infection can have a variety of causes: deep decay, repeated dental procedures on the tooth, or a crack or chip in the tooth. In addition, an injury to a tooth may cause pulp damage even if the tooth has no visible chips or cracks. If pulp inflammation or infection is left untreated, it can cause pain or lead to an abscess.
Signs you need a Root Canal include:
severe or chronic pain
prolonged sensitivity to heat or cold
tenderness to touch and chewing
discoloration of the tooth
swelling, drainage and tenderness in the lymph nodes as well as nearby bone and gum tissues.
Sometimes, however, there are no symptoms. When in doubt, call our office to schedule an exam. Dr. Gledhill will review your symptoms, conduct a thorough evaluation and provide you with comprehensive treatment options. In the case of extensive decay, Dr. Gledhill will recommend the placement of a crown, or even composite restoration to protect and strengthen your tooth.
